Notes

You now have an option between the experimental splix2 driver and the proprietary samsung driver. The splix2 driver appears to work just as well as the samsung driver. (26 November 2008) . Just grab the files, meet the dependencies (apt-get build-dep cups and libcups2/similar ) or using whatever package manager you have / methods. Then make install. It will appear in cups. Enjoy.

---------------------------------------------------------

Don't use the driver software provided on the driver CD : it is obsolete and will mess everything up. Go on samsung website directly to get lates version

Download and install the latest original driver from Samsung, cause you'll need the filters and PPD file for CUPS to get this printer to work. The driver itself won't work for you in most of distros, so you'd better configure your printer with CUPS web interface (http://localhost:631)

The scx4200.ppd from driver installation files must be placed in /usr/share/ppd to let CUPS find it

You can Scan with no problems with the samsung control panel (but it sets (or it used to) the suid bit on xsane, that's pretty bad)

Scanner configuration seems ok (some people say thet scanning is OK only for root - don't believe them, don't tell'em anything, just smile and add your user to "lp" group ;) )

P.S. Some people (in Ubuntu forums) report that interpreter in driver installation script (install.sh) should be changed to "/bin/bash" from "/bin/sh" to get all installation "bash-only" tricks well done (of course, this doesn't bother you if your /bin/sh symlink already points to bash :) )
