Notes
This printer is very similar to the ML-2510 in physical form except for lack of parallel port and new style buttons on top. Also appears to run smoother and sound quieter than the ML-2510 and resolution is stated as 1200x600.
The printer installed and operated fine with CUPS on an i386 2.6.24.5-smp Slackware 12.1 Linux box.
1. Download ML-1640 Unified Printer Driver from Samsung Website
2. cp cdroot/Linux/i386/at_root/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl /usr/lib/cups/filter/
3. mkdir /usr/share/cups/model/custom
4. cp cdroot/Linux/noarch/at_opt/share/ppd/ML-1640spl2.ppd /usr/share/cups/model/custom/
5. chmod +x /etc/rc.d/cups
6. /etc/rc.d/rc.cups start
7. Point your browser to http://localhost:631 and Add Printer and when prompted scroll and select the ML-1640.
NOTE:
On Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-6-686 items 5. and 6. become :
5. chmod +x /etc/init.d/cupsys
6. /etc/init.d/cupsys start
